The Museum of Natural History

How do you geek up a wedding? Add Star Wars, dinosaurs, Battlestar Galactica, Serenity, World of Warcraft, and even a hint of steampunk. The twist? You’d never in a million years expect a wedding like this one — held in a natural history museum, no less — to be so incredibly posh.

Rings and cufflinks

According to Offbeat Bride, husband & wife Lynn (a video game company employee) and Dorian (a lawyer) first met at Blizzcon, and aside from hitting it off romantically, they discovered that they held similar tastes in geekdom. So when wedding bells rang, they decided to go gonzo and celebrate their mutual passions. But that didn’t mean they had to sacrifice on beauty or elegance.

Han and Leia -- with snowcones

First, they rented the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles and decided to hold the wedding in the dinosaur exhibit; they took their vows with a backdrop of two enormous fossils poised as though they’re in the midst of battle. After walking in to the epic theme music from Jurassic Park. The wedding cake was a specially-made Millenium Falcon replica with Hoth as the backdrop. The cake even included a miniature Han and Leia, eating snowcones! To protect the cake, they had Boba Fett himself there to ward off wayward kiddies.

The couple named their tables after references from Blizzcon and other memories from their lives together. When it came time for the guests to make a declaration of support for the couple, they all shouted in unison, “So say we all!” Almost every part of the wedding was made up of custom creations — down to the custom Converse shoes and the Darth Vader and Stormtrooper cufflinks all the groomsmen wore — so clearly, money was no object. Special movie posters were printed for the occasion, announcing the happy couple’s wedding day as “coming soon.”

So what was their secret to seamlessly incorporating all of these disparate, geeky themes, while still having an undeniably beautiful wedding? Lynn and Dorian credit the 13 or so vendors they hired to help them create the event — and stressed the importance of hiring vendors that they trusted.
